About

We are a group campaigning

  • Against spiraling rents in the private sector
  • For rent controls
  • For ethical landlord schemes
  • For ethical lettings agencies
  • For standards of service and rent levels associated with ethical landlords and lettings agencies

Our campaign is open to all who support its aims and though currently based in Brighton and Hove we intend to network with other organisations committed to these ends across the country with the goal of developing a national voice.

  1. 18 months ago I was evicted, after 14 years good tenancy, so landlord could double rent. After improving property I’m now in, landlord evicted me to sell. I have no rights. He has behaved in a criminal way and authorities now encourage me to behave in a criminal manner to counter the problem. This is not the solution. MP’s have to start listening with regard to the volatile rental market that leaves all the cards in landlords hands. This is Dickensian, the way landlords are allowed to mistreat their tenants.

    • Hi James,

Yours is unfortunately not a rare case of the mistreatment private tenants are facing. We have had success with our petition, 2500 signatures, having presented it at full council and got several amendments raised by the Green Party and passed unanimously by all parties, for consideration at the next housing committee which is on the 12th November at 4 pm. The group is spurred on by all the support we have had and have many events planned. Please let me now if you would like any information on these.

  2. Hi we’re looking to cover this spiralling rents story and wondered if we could speak to someone from the campaign on our breakfast show at 705am on Monday and whether you could put us in touch with people who are struggling to pay their rent. Please ring me today, Friday, on 01273 320444
    Thanks

  3. Thank you for having the motivation and community spirit to carry this through. I’m a single mother, working as a teaching assistant, finding it almost impossible to live in Brighton due to the extortionate rents. I really appreciate your energy. Thank you for organising this petition.

    • Hi Vanessa

thanks for your support, as you can see from the website we presented our petition and got several amendments passed by council to be considered at the Housing committee on 12th November. We had press coverage as well. keep a look out for what action we will be taking before the committee.

  5. Hi, where’s the meeting on 18th March please? I really need to be a part of this. The council’s housing department are now treating me like a criminal because of a lying landlord, who’s rotten and damp flat destroyed my property, on which I spent over £2,500, assured of a long tenancy. Now, owing me money, he convinced the council that I trashed his flat, despite the landlord being with me when I left and testimonials saying that the carpet was in good order, etc. I even have a video showing the flat had been gutted, and everything that the landlord charged for ended up in a skip. Besides Hoogstraten, I’ve never known anything like it.

    • Hello James,

Thank you for your message but very sorry to hear what has happened; what a really terrible situation to be in. I hope you’ve been getting some helpful advice

It would be great to see you at the next meeting, it is on Wednesday 18th March at 7pm, upstairs at The Southover Pub, Southover Street, Hanover, Brighton.

Also, there’s the hustings with local MPs on 31st March at 7pm at The Brighthelm centre, where you can voice your opinion and ask questions to local MPs on housing issues.

We look forward to seeing you.

      Best wishes,
